Richard C O Lovesey

Coloured Pencil Artist

Aviation Tutorial 1 - Step 1

The following tutorial features one of my aviation paintings entitled Awaiting Departure. The image size of this painting is 10in x 14in and it is displayed within a 16in x 20in frame. The painting depicts Lancaster bombers at dusk, awaiting departure on another sorte from a Lincolnshire airfield during the Second World War.
The materials used are: Derwent W/C Aquatone sticks, Water-colour pencils, Artists, Studio and Pastel Pencils.
As water is to be used to create the background, this painting was produced on Snow White Daler Mountboard,
which is very forgiving where applications of water are concerned.

Firstly, I located the horizon, just under 1/3 up from the bottom of the board, (Note: image shown does not show area below horizon line). Derwent Aquatone sticks were then used to apply pigment for the sky, as shown. The sky colours used are: Prussian Blue; Dark Violet; Magenta and Mid Crome Orange. A degree of experience is useful when deciding exactly how much pigment to apply so experiment beforehand.
