The next step is to apply water to the pigment. For this painting, I used a natural sponge which I soaked and then wringed almost dry before applying. Pass over each colour with the sponge rinsing it before moving to the next colour. This will allow you to gently blend the colours together whilst keeping each unaffected by the next. Always using long horizontal strokes, continue until you achieve a non-streaky, smooth finish. If you find some areas of colour are not strong enough, apply water-colour pencil once surface is dry to the touch and then blend with a wet brush.
