Coloured Pencil Artist

Cavalier King Charles Tutorial - Step 2

I now create the eyes, the most crucial feature as they show the subject's character and help bring it to life. The eyes also create an 'anchor', giving a point from which to work away from. The eyes are started with around five successive light layers of Burnt Sienna which is blended smooth with a paper stump. Copper Beech is then applied and blended, giving depth and the pupil is created by combining layers of Burnt Umber and Indigo - not Black. Chocolate is then added to the iris to create the depth of colour required. A little touch of Heather Pink is used to tint the whites of the eyes. Mars Black and Indigo is applied around the eye lids to create shadow and to set the eyes back. I continue to build up the fur with light layers of Indigo and Ivory Black, darkening the shadow areas with further layers.
