Coloured Pencil Tutorial
Step 1 of 6
The following tutorial features one of my aviation paintings entitled Awaiting Departure. The painting depicts Lancaster bombers on a Lincolnshire airfield at dusk. The materials used are: Derwent W/C Aquatone sticks, Water-colour pencils, Artists, Studio and Pastel Pencils. As water is to be used to create the background, this painting was produced on Snow White Daler Mountboard, which is very forgiving where applications of water are concerned. Firstly, I located the horizon, just under 1/3 up from the bottom of the board, (Note: image shown does not show area below horizon line). Derwent Aquatone sticks were then used to apply pigment for the sky, as shown. The sky colours used are: Prussian Blue; Dark Violet; Magenta and Mid Chrome Orange. A degree of experience is useful when deciding exactly how much pigment to apply so experiment beforehand.
